ROSE

SHORTLAND

I am a London-based multi-disciplinary designer interested in hands-on making. Born in the Bay Area of California to British and British-Chinese parents, my multicultural background greatly influenced my identity and creative perspective. As such, I’m particularly interested in how culture and family shape who we are—an idea I love exploring through design.

With a background in fine art and drawing, my artistic aptitude often influences my design process. I’m interested in using my hands and feeling the process of making through form and texture. This is often reflected in media such as ceramics, model-making, print, carpentry, and various other craft-based media. I am always eager to learn with new media and processes, and am particularly interested in collaborating across artistic disciplines, integrating design with film, music, and live experiences.

Storytelling has become an important part of my design practice. I find a lot of inspiration in my community—friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers—learning through shared experience and conversations. These interactions challenge my perspectives, allowing me to grow not only as a designer, but also a person. I am particularly passionate about creating immersive worlds and experiences, where storytelling and hands-on making converge. I believe storytelling itself is a form of design, pushing me to share and understand what I’ve learned and also navigating my role as a designer amongst it all.
